This concert will feature our two Ohio University student jazz combos, with an introduction by Art Cromwell.
Chuck Stewart (1927-2017) graduated from Ohio University's fine arts photography program in 1949 and led an internationally successful career, becoming a seminal photographic artist in several genres of American music, including Jazz, Rhythm and Blues, Rock, and even the early generation of Hip-Hop. His photography featured on over 2,000 album covers for record labels such as Mercury, Argo, Impulse!, Chess, Atlantic, and Columbia Records. Stewart also made a major contributions in the field of photojournalism for African-American magazines such as Ebony, Jet, and the former magazine, Our World.

Stewart's photographic legacy has been exhibited at the National Endowment for the Arts, the Smithsonian Institution, the Grammy Museum, and The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Currently thirty of his photographs are being exhibited at SF Jazz Center in his first outdoor installation. Stewart's work represents a cultural archive of nearly one million images across various music genres, and political figures and cultural icons of the 20th Century.
The concert will take place under the skylight in the Library's Atrium. Dr. Art Cromwell, a scholar of media studies, will give a biographical introduction. Thank you to Todd Bastin at the Athens Public Library for helping make this event happen.
